The European Lift Directive and the Lift Regulations

July 1997 saw the introduction of new legislation (Lifts Regulations 1997) which had been based on a European Directive (European Parliament and Council Directive 95//16/EC).

This legislation became mandatory for anyone installing a new lift after July 1999. Here are some of the main points that may affect you.

What are The Lift Regulations

The Lift Regulations is a new Law published by the UK Government that is establishing new increased levels of safety for passenger lifts in line with the European Lift Directive. It will become Law for all new passenger carrying lifts that go into service from the 1 July 1999.

The scope of the Lift Regulations are as follows :

  • It shall apply to lifts permanently serving buildings and constructions and shall also apply to safety components used in such lifts.
  • Lift shall mean an appliance serving specific levels, having a car moving along guides which are rigid or inclined at an angle of more than 15 degrees to the horizontal and intended for the transport of a person, persons and goods or goods alone if accessible to people.
  • Safety components used in such lifts.
