Lifting operations and lifting equipment regulations 1998 (LOLER)

The regulation

MHSWR requires risk assessments to be carried out for all work activities in order that the nature and level of risk can be identified and to establish the appropriate precautions to be taken to eliminate or control these risks.

When conducting a risk assessment on lifting operations the following factors should be considered;

  • The type, weight and shape of the load being lifted, and what it consists of;
  • The potential for a load falling and/or striking a person or object, and the consequences;
  • The potential of the lifting equipment striking a person or object and the consequences;
  • The risk of the lifting equipment failing or falling over whilst in use or stored, and the consequences.

The risk assessment should also identify the requirements for personal protective equipment (PPE), e.g. safety harnesses, safety helmet, etc., Which will require compliance with the personal protective equipment regulations 1992.
